October is known for spooks and scares, but it's also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
What is Breast Cancer?
-Breast Cancer is when cancerous cells form in and around the breast tissue.
Facts about Breast Cancer:
-64% of cases are diagnosed at a localized stage, meaning it hasn't left the breast and the 5 year survival rate is 99%
-This year it's estimated 276,000 people will be diagnosed and that 42,000 will die in the US alone
-Men, though less likely, can develop breast cancer as well
-1 in 8 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime and it's estimated a woman is diagnosed with it every two minutes
-Next to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer to develop in women
-There are over 3.5 million survivors in the US
How can we help?
-Raise awareness by talking with people, sharing information on social media and in person, end the stigma around talking about it
-Educate yourself to the signs of breast cancer, do regular self checks and set up annual appointments with your doctor or OBGYN for screenings
-Donate to charities fighting for a cure and to those that support people going through it
